Congratulations to Connect Sports Academy duo Lukhanyo ‘Boepa’ Vokozela and Lamla Nunu, who have become the first of our athletes to sign professional rugby contracts.
Boepa and Lamla will both join Western Province in January 2021 on finishing school at Rondebosch Boys’ High School in Cape Town.
The front row pair, both 18-years-old, intend to continue their education at university alongside taking their first steps in professional sport with their local union.
It means they’re set to remain in Cape Town for the next phase of their development, having started their rugby journey as part of our group training sessions in Khayelitsha back in 2015 at the age of 13.
Since then, they have both represented Western Province at age group level, with both taking part in the 2019 Craven Week in Bloemfontein in their first senior year, with Boepa having featured at the Under 16 Grant Khomo Week in Kimberley in 2018.
Boepa also made his mark on the international stage in 2019 when he played for the SA Schools A side in International Series fixtures against Wales and Argentina.
Making the Connect family proud
The news is another great landmark for Connect, as Boepa and Lamla help set the example for their fellow academy athletes to follow.
It has been a pleasure to walk this path together so far.
It is also proof of what young people can achieve, no matter what their background is, when they are provided with consistent access to quality resources and opportunities.
A big thank you to everyone who has supported our young trailblazers over the last half a decade, as we aim to nurture the next generation of South African sport.
We look forward to continuing to support Boepa and Lamla at our Burgundy High Performance Centre home, as they take the next steps on an exciting journey.
