Lukhanyo ‘Boepa’ Vokozela has sealed another Connect Sports Academy landmark, becoming our first athlete to be selected for the South African national Under 18 squad.
Our long-serving hooker has been called up for the SA Schools A side for the rest of the U18 International Series in the Western Cape.
Boepa will start on the bench for the clash with Wales on Tuesday 13 August at Paarl Gimnasium.
He is expected to feature again as the 2019 competition concludes on Saturday 17 August, as the A side take on Argentina in Wellington.
With the school rugby season then coming to an end, we’ll be welcoming Boepa and the rest of our school-age athletes back into our training base, Burgundy High Performance Centre, for our off-season training programme.
Rising through rugby with Connect
Boepa has been a member of our academy since our days of informal rugby coaching in the township of Khayelitsha, Cape Town, in 2015.
Along with several of our other athletes, he was awarded a high school scholarship in Cape Town starting in January 2018.
Since then he has progressed to the First XV ranks at Rondebosch Boys’ High School alongside his fellow Connect athlete, Lamla Nunu.
Both represented Western Province at the 2019 Craven Week in Bloemfontein, despite the pair being in just their first year of senior rugby.
Boepa also received provincial honours at the 2018 Grant Khomo Week in Kimberley, having played alongside Lamla at Iqhawe Week in Johannesburg in 2017.
