Congratulations to our Under 15 rugby sevens squad, who came away from the 2019 Marius Schoeman 7s competition as Plate champions.
Connect sealed the deal in the final against Durbanville thanks to an overtime try from Ridhau Bey, as our intrepid squad twice came from behind in the searing heat at Paarl Gimnasium.
It was a fairy-tale finish on a day that began with a 15-14 upset of Paul Roos Gimnasium by our development squad, who had never trained together as a whole before the tournament.
Victory over Parel Vallei followed, backing up a first day that saw our youngsters push Paarl Boys’ High all the way in a 26-14 group stage defeat.
We’ve walked a long road
That seven of our squad of 12 took their first rugby steps with us on a township field in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, in 2015 is a real source of pride for everyone involved with Connect.
It’s also a sign of our long-term commitment to helping young people from disadvantaged communities rise through rugby.
Bringing together young people from several backgrounds and giving them the platform to prove their ability is something that we cherish.
Thank you to everyone involved with the Marius Schoeman 7s for creating an event where our boys were able to do their thing on a level playing field.
Taking inspiration from the top
While the U15s return to their school studies, our leading senior athlete, Sesethu Mtshazi, is flying the Connect flag as part of the Springbok Women’s training squad in Port Elizabeth.
She’ll be part of an Invitational XV that takes on their Spanish counterparts this week, ahead of the upcoming Test series against Scotland in Cape Town.
U17 pair Lukhanyo Vokozela and Lamla Nunu, meanwhile, have both earned call ups to the South Africa Elite Development Camp, which takes place later in September.
